Next Generation Housing

Location: Hempstead, NY
Type: Invited Proposal
Size: 160 M2/1600 SF per Unit
Program: 6 Affordable LEED Platinum Housing Units
Client: Long Island Housing Partnership
Budget: N/A

This pilot project is intended to introduce affordable, environmentally conscious housing to a town in Long Island slated for urban renewal. It is the product of a joint venture among the Long Island Housing Partnership and the Nassau County Planning Federation.

2 blocks of 3 1600sf townhouses are situated parallel to the street on a terraced landscape.  A split level section is implemented in order to establish a degree of separation from the street and allow for 1.5-height living spaces. Terraced landscaping allows for level access to backyards. Between the 2 building groupings it acts as a buffer to the street as well as affording increased solar exposure.

The exterior of the building is clad in cement fiberboard and ipe lattice. Sliding ipe shutters provide solar shading on the west and south street façades. Simple passive systems and photovoltaic cells augment the building’s energy performance and will be LEED Platinum rated. This project received a Vision Long Island Smart Growth Award.
