This apartment combination for a semi-retired couple is organized around a long wall that divides the apartment into two zones along a
gallery hallway. The first zone consists of three large spaces that open to the expansive north views over the Upper East Side and the
East River. The living / dining space is adjacent to two large openings in the long wall. One opening is the wide entry hallway and the
second is the open kitchen. The bedrooms to the north are the flexible bedroom/study space, with two large sliding doors that allow light
into the hallway, and the master bedroom, which has a walk-in closet. The second zone consists of a dense collection of smaller,
secondary programmatic elements such as bathrooms, closets, and another flexible space that can be alternately used as a home
office or a third bedroom.

The flexibility of the bedroom spaces acknowledges the variable nature of living that the couple experiences. Some days there are large
family gatherings with many staying overnight in the spaces, other days the couple will work from home in separate rooms. The
restrained material palate of white walls and a light oak floor reflects natural light deep into the space and acts as a backdrop for the
couples’ idiosyncratic collection of furniture and art. In the bathrooms, a palate of grey and white stone tiles complement each other,
while in the kitchen a veined white marble contrasts with the oak drawer pulls.
